About Episode 7:
I canāt say enough about the joy and renewal I found in the garden last year.
Iāve been growing plants my whole life, but 2025 was a deeper immersion. One person I have to thank for that is Richo Cech (pronounced āRICH-oh CHECKā).
Richo Cech is the owner of Strictly Medicinal Seeds in Williams, Oregon ā the largest purveyor of its kind in the U.S. Heās also the author of Making Plant Medicine, and Growing Plant Medicine, Volumes 1 and 2. The former head of production for Herb Pharm ā a popular line of tinctures ā Richo is a legendary figure in the herbalism world. A former archeologist, Richo has spent decades growing medicinal plants and teaching others to do the same.
Richoās books are loaded with scientific rigor, tips on herbal healing, and homespun tales. Disappointed in other herbalism books that I found derivative, I discovered one of his books last winter, and then another. Soon I was ordering up seeds I hadnāt heard of and embarking on new botanical adventures.
As the growing season wound down in November I reached out to Richo with some questions for next season. One thing led to another and I ended up inviting him onto my podcast, the Quill Nook Experience.
Richo is a self-described āType Aā personality who bridges scientific observation and spiritual practice without any fluff. We talked about:
-
how plants serve up the opportunity to process hard emotions
-
why his marriage works (opposites attract)
-
why he abandoned no-till farming after his yields crashed
-
why to chew fresh hawthorn berries for cardiac issues
-
why thyme hates mulch
-
and much more!
Please let me know if you listen and have any thoughts or questions. I will be posting the show notes shortly as well.
